More credit card gymnastics

On Wednesday we made mention that the husband was approved for the Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards American Express Card to help with the paying down of our second mortgage debt.

Yesterday we received a follow-up phone call from Citi promoting an additional credit card - the Citi Professional, which is currently offering the exact same promotional offer that we received with the Citi Simplicity last year – 10,000 ThankYou Points after the initial purchase and a no-fee, 0% balance transfer offer for 12 months from the date of the first balance transfer.

We decided to jump on this deal after seeing that no-fee, 0% balance transfer offers seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. I also noticed that this promotion is currently being advertised on Citi’s website, so anyone can apply for this offer.

What’s particularly sweet about this deal is that we can hold onto the balance transfer offer for now and use it later next year when we might need it. In the meantime, we will make a small initial purchase with the card and redeem the bonus points for another $100 check payable to our student loan provider.

I’ll need to check to see if we can reallocate the $23,200 of available credit we have on our old Citi Dividend card, but we might not be able to do so since the Dividend is a personal credit card and the Professional is a business credit card.

In other news, after 9 months we received our first increase on our Fidelity Investments 529 College Rewards Card credit limit – bumping us up from $15,000 to $18,000. This was welcome news because since our account has been taken over by Bank of America, the option to request a credit limit increase online has been removed.

  • I can not beleive everything is so 'sweet'. There should be some kind of a trick. It doesn't make sense to me how you can buy something for ten bucks and get a $100 check? Banks are not stupid, aren't they?
